Websites, banks and streaming services often want to know whether a visitor connects directly or through a VPN, proxy, Tor or a server. There is no flag in an IP packet that says so; they infer it from what is known about the address. This tool shows the signals we can stand behind, each with its source:
- Tor exit relay — from the Tor Project’s own published list of exit addresses, refreshed every few hours. For the time of the list, this is a fact.
- Hosting or data-centre network — the network’s registered name matched against cloud, hosting and VPN operators (Amazon, Google Cloud, Hetzner, OVH, M247, Datacamp, and Turkish hosts such as Radore or Natro …). Most commercial VPN and proxy exits sit in data centres, so this is the strongest open signal. It is a labelled guess about the network, not about the one address.
- VPN / proxy / relay classifications from a commercial provider, shown only when the site operator has enabled one.
What cannot be detected reliably: residential proxies (traffic routed through ordinary home connections), VPNs that rent home or mobile addresses, and private VPNs on a home connection. No public list of VPN exit addresses exists. “No signals” therefore never means “not a VPN”.
When you check your own address, the page also compares your browser’s time zone with the address’s estimated one — in your browser only.
Preguntas frecuentes
Why is my home connection flagged as hosting?
It should not be; if it is, your provider's network name matched a hosting pattern, or your router uses a VPN or a cloud DNS/proxy service. Send us a correction through the contact page with the AS number.
Can a website see that I use a VPN?
Often, yes: most VPN exits are in data centres, and the address's location may not match your browser's time zone or language. A VPN hides your address, not the fact that a VPN is in use.
Is Tor the same as a VPN?
No. Tor routes traffic through three volunteer relays and the exit addresses are public, so sites can recognise Tor exits with certainty. A VPN is a single operator's server.
Does this tool store what I check?
No. The address is looked up in our own datasets (and in an enabled provider, if any) to answer the request; nothing is written to disk or logs.
