Latency is the time a message takes to reach a server and come back. It decides how responsive the web feels far more than bandwidth does: every connection, every TLS handshake and many page resources need at least one round trip.

This test is run by your browser: it sends twenty small requests to our server one after another and times each round trip. The first request, which may have to open a connection, is not counted. The result is your connection’s latency to us, including your Wi-Fi, your provider’s network and the route between them and our server.

It is not an ICMP ping. Browsers cannot send pings, and our server does not ping or trace other hosts on request, because that would make it a free scanning service. HTTP adds a little processing time, so expect values a few milliseconds above a ping to the same place.

Domande frequenti

What is jitter?

How much the round-trip time varies from one request to the next. High jitter hurts calls and games more than a slightly higher but steady latency.

Why is Wi-Fi slower than a cable?

Radio adds delay and retransmissions, especially with interference or many devices. If the latency over Wi-Fi is much higher than over a cable, the problem is in your home network, not your provider's.

What is a good result?

It depends mostly on distance. A fixed connection to a server in the same country usually stays well under 20 ms and a mobile connection under 50 ms; from Türkiye, servers in Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Sofia typically add 30–60 ms, and servers in North America well over 100 ms. Higher values are not wrong in themselves; what matters is whether they are steady.
