According to the RIPE NCC’s delegation file, 16,827,072 IPv4 addresses (2,043 blocks) and IPv6 space equivalent to 4,440 /32s (672 blocks) are registered to organisations in Türkiye (7 November 2026). These figures say to whom the addresses are registered, not where they are used. The current values are recomputed with every dataset build on Türkiye in numbers.
The first blocks: universities
Türkiye’s internet history starts with its universities. The oldest large block on record is 139.179.0.0/16, allocated on 26 March 1990 and still registered to Bilkent University. Middle East Technical University’s 144.122.0.0/16, allocated on 5 December 1990, is announced today by AS1967. The academic network ULAKNET (AS8517) connects the universities with blocks such as 193.140.0.0/16.
Allocations by period
Most of the IPv4 space registered in Türkiye was allocated between 2004 and 2012, the years broadband and mobile internet spread quickly:
| Period | IPv4 allocated (approx.) |
|---|---|
| 1990–1999 | 1.4 million |
| 2000–2003 | 1.1 million |
| 2004–2008 | 7.9 million |
| 2009–2012 | 5.9 million |
| 2013–2026 | 0.6 million |
The sharp drop after 2012 is not specific to Türkiye: the RIPE NCC reached its last /8 in September 2012 and began handing out only small blocks to new members, and in November 2019 it ran out of free IPv4 space altogether. Since then new IPv4 space can only be obtained by transfer from another holder.
IPv6
The first IPv6 block registered in Türkiye dates from 4 October 2002; ULAKBİM’s 2001:a98::/32 was allocated in 2003. The registered IPv6 space is large, but the number of networks announcing IPv6 is limited: of the 889 Turkish-registered ASNs announcing routes, 173 also announce IPv6 prefixes.
Registered, announced, geolocated
Three different figures are often confused:
- Registered: blocks the RIPE NCC lists with country code TR (16.8 million IPv4).
- Announced: space Turkish-registered networks announce in BGP (25.8 million IPv4), including transferred blocks and blocks of customers abroad.
- Geolocated: addresses DB-IP estimates to be used in Türkiye (17.4 million IPv4); more than half of them appear in İstanbul, where the large operators’ core networks are.
An IP lookup shows the “Registration” and “Location” of an address separately.
